Repeat Prescription Policy

Certain medications that are prescribed for your pet may be for long-term treatment.

Most of the medicines used are ‘prescription only medications’ or ‘POMs’ and as such need to be dispensed by one of Veterinary Surgeons for ‘an animal under their care’. This means the vet is making both legal and ethical obligations for the correct use of these medicines and as such we are under some constraints.

Prescription refunds

In accordance with VMD & RCVS guidelines we are not able to refund prescription medications once they have left the practice.

How to order your pet's medication

Complete this prescription request form or call the surgery where the reception staff will take your order. Please ensure you leave us a suitable telephone number in case we need to contact you regarding the prescription request for your pets medication.

As part of our efforts to be Greener, we are now receiving less deliveries per week from our wholesale supplier. In most cases repeat prescriptions will be ready for collection within 48 hours however in some cases medication will need to be ordered in, in which case it will be ready the following Tuesday or Friday depending on the day of the request being made. Our team will email you to confirm when your pets repeat prescription will be ready to collect.

Part of the Repeat Prescription request process also involves the following:

• Allows us time to check your clinical records to make sure the medication is still correct and appropriate for your animal or if they require a check-up
• Gives the vet time to issue and dispense the prescription
• Allows us time to order some of the products needed if not in stock
• Means that your prescription can be ready for when you attend the surgery

Regular check-ups and repeat examination policy

For all medications your pet needs to be assessed by one of the vets at least every 6 months, although sometimes more often and particularly if they are on a new medication or dose. This:

• Is to ensure your pet is not suffering from any side-effects
• Ensures that the medication is appropriate and to discuss possible new treatment regimes that may have become available and be more appropriate
• Means we are able to weigh your animal and ensure the dose is still correct
• Is a requirement for ourselves to ensure that your pet is still considered to be reasonably ‘under our care’ as required by The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

The exception to the ‘6-month rule’ is preventive treatment for fleas and worms. Although these are still prescription medications and far more advanced than products found in pet shops and supermarkets, we only need to have examined your pet within the last 12 months to dispense them.

Please note we do not routinely authorise repeats of either antibiotics or ear-drops (the latter need to have the ear drum checked before dispensing).

Our standard consultation fee applies for any repeat medication consultations. Charges will also apply for any tests recommended upon examination.

Clients are welcome to request the cost of medications available from the surgery.

Clients are also welcome to request a written prescription for medications, subject to a professional service fee, that would allow you to obtain these products from another veterinary surgeon or online pharmacy.
