Orthopaedics

Our Orthopaedics clinical service is run by two of our vets, Chris Aylott and Adam Maxton, at both our Chesham and Chalfont St Giles surgeries.

Chris graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1990. After spending a couple of years in mixed practice, he moved into small animal practice and has been working in small animal practice ever since. Throughout his career Chris has had a keen interest in all types of surgery and is now our most experienced vet. He is equally happy doing delicate dissection in soft tissue surgery as he is using the drills and saws in orthopaedics.

Adam graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2015. Since then, he has worked in small animal practice, most recently in central London. Adam has completed further training in small animal surgery and enjoys all aspects of surgery, with a special interest in soft tissue surgery.

Prices

Our prices are usually significantly lower than at specialist referral centres and so can be a good option for clients and pets who cannot proceed with full specialist referral.

If you are interested in knowing more about the prices involved please do give our reception team a call or pop them an email at reception@wheelhousevets.co.uk.

How Do I Arrange An Appointment For This Service?

If you are already a Wheelhouse client, please discuss this with your usual vet, who can arrange for you to be seen by the Orthopaedics clinical service.

If you are not already registered with the Wheelhouse Vets, then please contact your usual vet to request an appointment with our Orthopaedics clinical service.

A member of our team will then give you a call to book your appointment.

Pre-Surgery Care

Our Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation team are here to assist with the preparations that are required to keep your pet comfortable before and after surgery and provide you with the information on how to assist your pet with their recovery. Implementing recommendations before the surgery will help your pets settle into their recovery environment ready for when they come home.

Prior to surgery we will discuss the following with you:

  • Preparation of the home environment
  • Wound Care
  • Nutrional support
  • Exercise recommendations before surgery
  • Cold therapy and laser therapy treatments that form part of our aftercare treatment
  • Rehabilitation clinics to assist with recovery and return to function

Please see Physiotherapy and Laser Therapy for further information on this service.

Post-Surgery Care

We offer a supportive care package to assist you and your pet through the recovery process.

  • Following orthopaedic surgery our patients receive 5 laser therapy treatments and 5 rehabilitation sessions as part of the surgery package. The benefits to laser therapy can be found in the laser therapy section of our website and will be discussed with you prior to the surgery. The treatments are carried out in the first 2 weeks of recovery and the rehabilitation sessions are all tailormade to your pet's procedure and recovery, following on from the laser therapy treatments.
  • We offer an additional follow-on laser therapy package, which includes 10 laser treatments. The benefits to this package and the protocol will be tailored to each patient and discussed with you.
  • The aim of our rehabilitation sessions is to return our patients to as near ‘normal’ function as possible through a tailor-made rehabilitation plan of therapeutic techniques consisting of massage treatments, remedial exercises and exercise progression. Our patients are assessed at each appointment for their progression, and we work closely alongside our surgical team throughout.
